Cycling commuters in Singapore

We see more cycling commute to work and they are familiar faces at LCSG. They are the Woo sisters, George Kee, Kee Tiong and Bernard all sharing their route and real life experiences.
It's good that they are being featured in the media and helps to give more awareness to cycling commuting. Hope this can inspire more to try it. Digital link here
If you are a cycling commuter in singapore, pls drop me a note below. I want to collect ur route and story so that we can share it out to more folks...

Cycling for everyday

Singapore is under going some big shifts in transportation. One of which is the use of bicycle. The usual perception from friends whom I chat with is this....  that cycling is something you do for fun and during the weekends. However, with the all day access on the MRT, I have noted more riders are begining to do the bike/MRT/Bike. Its really a good way to move around. Here's some of the riders who I see on Lovecyclingsg Facebook.
It's looking good! These early adopters are leading the way to shift public perceptions of cycling as a alternative commuting mode.
Thats cool!  Do try it!
This is my experience with my Carryme. Will be trying with other bikes too. Stay tuned!

Why?

Why? Many folks ask me that.... I give you my answer in a photo.  One rider starting... is one step in the right direction. Let's all try to make things better! Push on!

Cycling to get around your neigbourhood

I saw the scene near my home today. They are sending their child to the nearby childcare or school. No fuss, just a simple and most practical way to do so.  Its a normal thing to do. They take the pavement because it is the safer option and they are probably uncomfortable with the road traffic.
Imagine if we have even safer condition for cycling. I am sure more would try the cycling option.

For now, let's try to use the bicycle as much as we can for our daily task. Start small. Try using it to go for dinner, for buying some simple groceries.  These actions will help change perceptions of the bicycle as a form of recreation.
One bicycle at a time.... we will get there!

Cycling on pavement and why I do it

Cycling on pavement. This topic will draw a lot of comments on social media. Reason being legally in Singapore, cyclists are supposed to be cycling on the road. With the exception of Tampines, cycling on pavement is illegal.(but not enforced strictly).
However in the actual day to day conditions, we can see many people taking the pavement for mainly safety considerations.
These are the young, the elderly, the folks who are not confident of their riding skills.
The most common reason given is "vehicular traffic is too fast and aggressive. I am scared of the cars."
I do this too with my gal for the same reason.
My question when being questioned is always...."would you let your child to ride on the road? Why not?"

I hope this paradox can change in our sunny island sometime in the future. In the meantime, I will still take to the pavement if the road situation is too dangerous.
The wide pavement near my home @ Pungool
However, I always keep this 2 points in mind when I am riding on the pavement. Its simple.
  1. I will give way to pedestrians.  They are the priority.
  2. Be nice and polite. Do not ring the bell.

Pedestrian have right of way.
This is a sign I saw in Taipei which I feel works in communicating the direction forward. Cyclists need to give way to pedestrians. There is no other way about it. I hope our agency can adapt for Singapore condition.
The onus must be for cyclists to adapt and walk the bike if the conditions are too crowded.
Please also do not ring the bell as it irritates the pedestrians. Instead, use a nice apologetic tone with a smile. "Hello, sorry excuse me... passing thru".  I do this all the time and most are very understanding.
Hope it helps you have a safer and pleasant ride with your loved ones. If there are other good tips, pls drop me a comment so I can edit this to allow better information sharing.

Punggol to get cycling paths by 2017

This is fantastic news and good to see more progress for cycling infra in Singapore.  I am very happy as it happens at my town, Punggol!
This is how Pungol PCN looked in 2010  http://smallwheelsbigsmile.blogspot.sg/2010/08/pungol-pcn-in-progress.html
I use the bicycle to get around my neighbourhood and sometimes with my gal as well. We were also featured with our friends doing a leisurely family ride at Pungol waterway. yeahh! It has never looked for cycling in Singapore!

Small steps forward for a better cycling experience at Johor Baru

I saw a thread on Facebook and it was about painting  a wider yellow line on the road..... and the bicycle icon.  Although it seems like a trival thing to do but  it sure creates more awareness for cycling/cyclists. Well done JB and Happy Riders Connect group!
