Tomorrow we ride for Paul Lim. Now 128km can be a piece of cake for some but to most of us weekend cycling warriors and LCSG-ers it is abit on the long side. No matter and I know we will be able to make it. Double water bottle filled, Tires check, patch kit, levers, handpump, inner tubes, power gel, snacks... all checked. Zip tie the awesome Paul ride design on my bike. Lube it all up and did a test ride to check all is in working condition. Ready.... set....
yes, I cheated.. I took out my Plechser stand to reduce weight..
Mounted a foam board to read the directions... so I don't bring team 4 to holland
Spare tube, potato chip, power gel, candy, rain coat
Toolkit and levers checked
Swapped to my trusty Lezne pump.. not as sexy as the carbon one but this pumps faster, better.
22 fellow cyclists came down to Lifecycle@ Punggol for Heng sharing session of the Paris-Breest- Paris ride (PBP in short) . Heng brought along his bicycle, jerseys and alot of memos on the ride. As the talk started, he explained how he was just like us 4 years ago. Riding foldies and zipping around Singapore. Then, 40 km is a big acomplishment... as it turns out, they began to ride further and further(sounds familar huh?) To malaysia, Penggarang, Desaru, Ipoh century and more. Later onwards, he discovered Randonneuring and a group in Singapore doing it.
Learning about yourself, pushing beyond. Talking helps. Nuggets of real riding wisdom was shared freely. When asked why do it? Heng reply was " it is like asking a mountaineer, why go for mount Everest. Or Marathon runnner why do it? Because it is there...." And he made pains to show that it is not just about cycling. This ride is a meeting of people. Different people with the same love - cycling... make that long range cycling. Heng went into the details for preparing for the ride... and all over the shop... I could see the jaw drop... and Uncle KC salivating... It was awesome sharing and if u like to know more. Pls go to Heng's personal blog on his PBP account. Rest of the event photos here
Lastly I want to thank Heng and Simon of Lifecycle for making this all possible for our lovecyclingsg team. Now should we be doing a loooonger ride? What say u?
爱骑车。爱友谊 << This is from Kim, and is my biggest take away...
80 folks met at ECP Mac to embark on a 128km loop around Singapore. This time, we did it east wards. The route is ECP Mac>> Changi Village>> Punggol>> Yishun>> Sembawang>> Woodlands>> Kranji>> Lim Chu Kang>> NTU>> Jurong West>> Pandan Loop>> West Coast road>> VivioCity>> Lau pak Sat >> ECP Mac. And a bunch of us also continued to Tan tock Seng for the World Hospice Day.
The folks were split into 4 groups to ensure safety and better coordination. They were as follows:
1) Sleepy Gonzales led by Sir KC and Sweeper Zack.
2)Panda group 2, led by Chief Panda Clarence Chang and Sweeper Vince Li.
3) Titanium Butt group 3, led by Titanium butt Chief Patrick Yee and Sweeper Adrianne Lee
4) Flying Turtle group 4, led by Encik George Lim and Master Sweeper Steven lim, Andy Yap and Boo.
First pack started around 8pm with 10 min intervals. We had cooling weather and no rain. The darkness however made it quite difficult for identification and we were very lucky to have Sean and Vince Li sponsor the group, light sticks and blinking straps. To make the event even extra special, David Eng and Joeel worked hard to design and personally made the limited edition glow in the dark stickers. Only for those who rode. Not for sale.

roll off!
at night... it is good to have plently of blinkers!
Andy and Kimi @ Changi village... sup sup water...
@Kranji 7-11, tired but in good spirits:)
Through out the ride, I could hear shouts of encouragement egging each other on. Music blarring away. Folks sharing all their candies, deep heat, chocolates, power bar. What a team! Everyone looked out for one another. Special mention and really unforgetable was meeting LCSG Angels @ 3am in the morning. They took the form of Steve and Bernice. Waving down the cycling groups and giving out cold 100plus drinks and bannanas. That was so nice of them! When most would be sleeping, they came out of their way to cheer the team.. I am touched by their gestures and I know many too on that day. Thank you Angels!

Don't look like much but it all comes from the heart. That is all that matters
mobile pitstop in the middle of the nite... 3am to be exact!
With the constant chatting and cursing.... we eventually ended the ride at ECP. Thankfully no major incidents and all who completed was on a high. Elaine Pan, smiled and told me... "Backside pain... but feeling very good. I like it! yayyyh" And Joeel, who suffered from knee pain in the middle of the ride... grin and soldered on. It was really a feat of endurance when I saw the pain written on his face. The coolest part... when he arrived... .team turtle lined up and cheered!
Dear, I love u!

Lastly I want to give my biggest thanks to all leads and sweepers and old birds for looking out for their flock and friends. Thank you very very much for the the excellent sweeping by Steven Lim, Andy Yap and Boo. To ensure that the slower riders could find their way. What a ride and I could hear murmings of ..."this is chicken feed... maybe we combined KODH with 128km!!!" wah lau... u all very hard core... hmm should we or shouldnt we? Tell me what u think? http://lovecyclingsg.niceboard.com/t256-slow-and-steady-ride-de-singapore-3rd-july-2011-sunday Folks, 3 weeks to the slow and steady ride de Singapore....All the gear won't help if u don't put in the miles in training... or unless u have a really iron butt... :) Here are some items for ur considerations (thanks Adriane for compiling this) 1 ) Chapping Cream. (Please add in other recommended brands, Andrew I forgot the brand you recommended, please help add it here) http://smallwheelsbigsmile.blogspot.com/2011/06/century-riding-cream.html 2 ) Water bottle +one extra (Although we might be serviced by our "support" team of petrol kiosks, it is best to be self sufficent especially when we get to the northern part of the ride) 3 ) Isotonic drinks or even better powder so you can mix your own on the spot 4 ) Energy bars such as those sold in sports shops or museli bars etc, you can also consider energy gels. Bear in mind we will not be stopping for meals as in sit down and makan. With the amount of cycling we are doing, we NEED to replenish our energy supplies that we are losing rapidly. 5 ) You can also bring things like nuts or dried fruits, dont bring chocolate, it makes you thirsty and will melt in your bag making it one messy cleanup. 6 ) Sun glasses or a cap to shade your eyes 7 ) Sunblock for the sun 8 ) arm covers to prevent sun burn on your extended arms 9 )Helmet and gloves 10 ) Lights 11 ) Handphone that is fully charged and equipped with numbers of ride leaders. 12 ) Money to take cab etc if needed. 13 ) Poncho if you want for rain. 14 ) Spare tube, patch kit and pump. 15) Plasters for blisters, deep heat cream or spray and small first aid kit (Added by Lugerider)
They say experience makes men wiser. I suppose so... Having been thru the "relax" ride from Kluang to SG. I know have a softer side.. My bums that is.... It was so painful and rubbed raw that when I finally reached home and showered... The water was like acid on skin. It took a superman effort not to scream( my gal and CEO was asleep...and u dun want to wake them up) .... Let's just save u the details... Not very pleasant. Oh if u have baby diaper rash cream, I can assure u it works fine to ease the chaffing " fire" ... So wiser now I googled for solutions And I found this review on Century riding cream. I bought one and will try out in tonite ride.... Keep u posted if it really works. Pray for me yah?
Update after yesterday 60km night ride I applied it and no chaffing! Strange, but works! I will use this from now on. Now need to increase mileage and ride! :) Yes! to more miles!
