Simple life simple pleasures

I had a nice morning with my little girl, Momo. She asked if we could have Mac Donald's for Breakfast. Yes sir, they are not exactly the breakfast of champions nor the most healthy choice. But when I see her doey eyes, the answer was clear. We will have Mac Donalds!

Check out the wide pavement @ Punggol. This is prime potential for a cycling path!
It was about 3 km away and we took the bicycle. The morning air was cooling and nice for a ride.  On a sat morning, there was also less frantic traffic which was good for riding.

Momo says Yummy!!!
The journey was 95% on Pavement and we took special care to slow down when pedestrians were near by. No fuss no funny look. Just plenty of smile when they see my little gal with her Mega smile and pink bike.

Let's go explore a different path home....

Life is simple. Lets not complicate things. The best things in life are just around you. Treasure them, Love them.

Small wheels big smile - Simple fun!

This wonderful photo of a boy popping a wheelie by Turodrique really made me smile.
It's that simple really. Just to be able to ride a bike.
Who cares if its a cheapo non branded bike.
Who cares if it is just riding around your block.
Who cares if the world changes and there are so much noise in your life.
The smile on the kid face simply said it all.
I am on my bicycle. I love riding it! It's just fun!
Let's keep it this way. Keep it Simple, keep it fun!

We had a kiddy ride from Kallang Mac to Benjamin Sheares via the PCN. It's a nice easy route for newbies and kids
Its the 3rd Lovecyclingsg anniversary. What a journey! We spent the weekend in a very unique way, by having a simple picnic. It was great to see children playing with each other, friends chatting and having a nice meal. Also try out my wifey super duper Mee siam... amongst the shiok food everyone brought along.

Mobile Bicycle Repairman @ Seng Kang

Not quite your stylo hi tech thingy but this generated lots of "148 likes" and comments in Lovecyclingsg Facebook. Reading the comments, like this one....
"Feel so heart warm to know there are still such people doing tat nowadays, it shd be his passion too  n my dad told me before tat when he was young in kampong, he used to cycle quite a distance all the way to a uncle tat fix bike n install the lastest blink blink lights on their bicycle n all children feel so interested n happy when they saw the uncle n their new gadgets mount, but he told me tat uncle work day to night non stop from early thirties to sixties till he got hunched back n fell sick. This pic let me think of the friendly n hardworking bicycle man whom my dad told me. I shall show this pic to my dad tomorrow  Thanks for posting this pic Simon Teo!
Joean Zeng"
There seems to be a longing of simpler things in life. This gentleman around Seng Kang just peddles his repair skill and some utility stuff like tubes, and tyres. Fixes the problems for the kids and other folks.  No fuss no markup.  Way to go uncle!

LCSG family ride at Garden by the bay 31st March 2013

Family and friends under Benjamin Sheares Bridge
Young Champ leading the way
Young and old. All welcome!
Over looking these!! so nice and it's free!
This is a special event ride for family and kids. The idea – come together; meet at a nice place to have a picnic.  And yes, also to ride abit, with the kids. No agenda, no fund raising, no “Lelong” day. Just a simple picnic with friends and family. That’s what we did on 31st March 2013
Desmond(big guy) with Tyrone(little policeman), Cayla, Momo and Kimi
Thanks to Desmond Chia who kindly stepped up to organize the event, we have a chance for family, friends, kids to mingle over some breakfast and just have a relaxed day out.  Desmond led the group from Kallang Mac Donald’s and followed the PCN towards Tangjong Rhu. A relatively short ride for adults but it must be quite an adventure for the little ones.
Wives sharing and chatting over food
so much to eat...

Vincent and family
Father and Son
Reaching the Benjamin Sheares Bridge, they met up with the mummies and smaller kids who were waiting for their arrival.  It wasn’t as windy but pleasant enough to have a nice picnic.
We also brought the kids around Garden by the bay and rode close to the Marina Barrrage.  The place was quite suitable for children.  It was really good to see them having fun. They zipped around , without a care in the world, shouting laughing happily.  Exactly how children should be. Parents sitting down, have a bite and chatting among themselves while Daddies would be looking at the bicycles talking about the latest mod.. .”poisoning” each other. Nice!
Paper airplane contest!
Bubbles!
Muffins for u sir?
Desmond and Shelby even prepared additional stuff for kids so that they can have even more fun. "Bubbles solution" bottles and paper airplanes. Simple stuff but it made the kids have so much fun.
My personal Dummy was also “pressed” into service by giving big and small kids joy rides. Judging by the smiles, I think they have a better understanding of the long bike and what fun it is to be just having ride.

Meeting after 20 years!!
Uncle KC also met his long lost friend over 20 years ago from PSA! It was pretty amazing to see them reminisced over good old time. Mr Wong came today as his Son, Roy was in LCSG and asked him along. Here's a nice pic of Uncle KC and Mr Wong.
Looking at the event, I am glad to be a part of Lovecyclingsg.
It is not about how far or hard we ride, nor about bicycles. But treasuring the simple friendship and family ties…. All made possible with the love of the humble bicycle! Lovely isn’t it?

Freeway or jam? .....your choice

This photo by Roland speaks volumes of the nightmare I go through daily. Jams. Why not ride instead? I have to drop my daughter at childcare which is about 5 km from my home. And I work at the other side of the country...  It takes me about in a good day 1hour 20min to reach work from Punggol to Jurong international business park. Many times the feeling is like a giant carpark... where cars just inch along. It sucks and suck bigtime.
My Van COE runs out in 2 years time... perhaps I should relook into cycling to work... I think at least I get some exercise as well.
Jam... what jam?                Photo credits Roland aka GV Sealion

New old bike story in ZaoBao

New Old bike
The poor bike have been standing there for a long time. It was a sad mess and the fram have a lot of scratches and rust spot. No major dents but thoroughly covered in dust and cobwebs. Rim wise, it was worn, useable and the spokes rusted. Cheng Sin Tyres deflated, hardens and cracked. It was just sitting there quietly for 20 years in my mum’s basement.
It was my bicycle. My very first bicycle. The bike I had bought using my first monthly salary working at the local bookstore. It wasn’t the top of the line bicycle but nevertheless it marked a very important phase of my life. I was in Secondary 1 and didn’t have a lot of money. I remembered the awe I had going to the bicycle shop at Hougang. I just told the shop uncle “ erh.. I want a racer and In a blur he sold me this bicycle with the words “ It is a steel frame, shimano parts, very good one” I couldn’t remember the full conversation but I remember distinctly how the bicycle looked. It was shiny and silver.  Pristine and clean. A size too big but it was just the right price.
With the bicycle, it was like having wings. I could explore the neighborhood and ride anywhere. It was my magic carpet and very liberating. Magical if u considered that I didn’t have lights nor a water bottle.
Powered by youth, I keep riding. It is amazing to feel the wind on my face. I rode from my home at Serangoon Gardens to Punggol End. Approaching Punggol was quite an adventure as it was still very forested and windy. I really didn’t know where I was heading. I just followed the road to the end of the jetty. Then turned back and rode home. Thinking back, I actually even rode on the ECP expressway once. For that ride, I was stopped by a policeman who told me that bicycles are not allowed on expressway. I honestly didn’t know that. Mr Policeman was smiling when he told me that. As if he also had done the same thing as I did when he was a schoolboy.
This bike is full of my childhood memories. I had to restore it. I spoke to many shop and all just told me to throw the bicycle away. That is was not worth it. I tried telling them about my childhood memories but they just laughed it off.
And eventually I found a shop by the name of TR bikes who agreed to help me. When I told TR bikes Lytnen, Chris and Henry my story, Chris looked at me and said. “Dun worry bro, we will take care of it.  2 weeks passed and I received a call from Chris. “The bicycle is ready.. come and see it….” I rushed down. Heart pumping and sweating. It was a beauty! Small changes and you can still see the scratches on the frame. I decided to leave it as is. Like battle scars and not shiny. The bike beckoned me to ride it and I did. Just a single speed, no fussing with gears. I pedaled and the bike moved forward. Just like old times. Wind in my face and I smiled. Welcome back old friend!

Grandpa bring me to school on a bicycle

The walk to the office from JTC hill carpark takes about 5-8min and is usually quite mundane. But sometimes, there are wonderful moments. Like this. It made me smile. Grandpa was having a little chat with his precious, oblivious to all the hustle and bustle. Cycling leisurely to the childcare... sure beats walking:)

morning ride at Jalan balrat

There is beauty everywhere.. this is a wonderful place near my home.  I stay around pungol area and from my window I can see the waterline and also development around it. I have always wondered where the new road leads too... so  One early morning I rode my bike to check out the place...  Jalan Balrat... it is an small island off Pungol which is now connected to Seletar air base.

Riding silently, I found my way to the edge of the coastline. There I stood looking at the waterline as the sun rose slowly... beautiful.  Simple pleasures of life. Next time, I will bring ah mo to see this. Wonder how long this place will be like this given the rate of development in Singapore.  Here are some pics. and more at my flickr
