LCSG 13th April 2014 Bike handling workshop

At Lovecyclingsg, we believe the best way of training is to learn by doing.  This effort was led by George Lim with many helpers for the common good of the community.  Have a look at the photos where the community learned the finer skill of bike handling specific to Singapore environment.
Some drills that was practised that day.
1) Learning to cycle slowly in the middle of 2 rows of cone. The intent is to simulate tight situation on the roads and also the pavement.  Moderating the speed with brakes and keeping a stable balance.
As the class progressed, the cones were moved closer to increase technical difficulty and give the riders confidence
2) S course. This helps the rider understand their bike handling and turning radius needed
3) E braking. Learn to use both brakes to stop cleanly and confidently.
4) Riding slow from one point to the other. This helps esp on pavement situation and tight lines riders face
We are also very happy to have the Nparks team coming and share more on what they are doing and also the signage that is common in the PCN.

LCSG Bike Skill Workshop - 27th Oct 2013

one for the camera!
As Lovecyclingsg family becomes bigger,  we sometimes meet riders who could do with a little more guidance. It helps already when we ride together on sunday as the newbies can learn from the more
seasoned riders. For safe cycling in my opinion, it is experiential. This means you just can't talk about it. Just like swimming.  To improve, you need to get ur "feet wet" and just practice.
On the 27th Oct 2013 Sunday, this was what we did. About 70 folks from LCSG and Chai Chee CC gathered at the Bedok Adventure park to practice their bike handling.  Using cone spaced out in many patterns, the riders learned about slow riding and keeping in a straight direction. The obstacle patterns mimicked some possible senerios on everyday riding.  Riding on the pavement, on the road with traffic. The focus was on controlling the bike in slow speed and turning in a smooth and safe manner. We also got them to practice emergency braking. First using just the front and then the rear, followed by both. This got the riders more used to their braking power and also understand how each braking can affect bike handling.
To many who don't realise, this bike Skill workshop can only happen with help from the Lovecyclingsg Angels. They are Pierre Chew, Jasper, Clarence, Vince Li, Nixs, Desmond Chia, Tiger Wan, Steven Tang, Keng Yong, Francis Chu, Berenda, Kimi Oh and many more. The man behind this is none other then our very own Encik George Lim. He not only prepared the course work and secured the location with Chai Chee CC support.  Many thanks for all your efforts!

The much awaited Bike handling for LCSG folks finally started at *Scape on 15th April 2012. All made possible with the help by Kenneth of Singapore bike school and Simon of Lifecycle who sponsored the venue.
Conducted very professionally, Kenneth and his team taught very useful skills like riding on narrow plank, balancing and handling the bike on uneven ground. Even more interesting was the  balancing and trying to ride at the slowest pace possible. It looks simple but was actually very challenging.
All the drills were done in a very fun and interactive way. I see many folks looking very stressed and wondered if they can make it. After the session, I must say their bike handling indeed improved alot! Guess tomorrow there will be some sore muscles but is all worth it. Here are the full set of photos of this very memorable event!

If you or your cycling group like to do the course, pls kindly contact Kenneth who would be glad to help you out.

Bike Handling lessons as taught by Singapore Bike School
1) Set up the obstacle course and allow riders to try out the course. - 20min
2) Cycle thru the cones, concentrate not to deviate pass the cones. Objective - improve tracking and eye/hand coordination. Your bike will track where your eyes look
3) Plank course - balancing and tracking.
4) Salom- Learning to use body weight to make the turns.
5) Riding one hand- Better control of the bike. Improved cyclists confidence. Cycle around the perimeter and switch hands when the whistle blows
6) Learning to brake quickly when at a quick stop
7) Start off the bicycle and stand up - Improve bike handling and confidence
8) Slow riding and balancing- Whole team start from end of the park and ride as slowly as possible to the other end.
