The rain clouds around the evening threaten to wash out the event but we were very lucky. Pungol/lor harlus remained clear and cooling for us to do the life paint trial.
30 brave riders joined me at Lor Harlus at 8pm to try out the reflective paint.  It was made even more special with Terry joining us. He is a fellow designer at my work place Dell and would be going back to his home town Taiwan. Its good to finally show him a bit of our country. Hope you will come back again Terry!

After explaining the collaboration and what had worked for me and  not. I just let the folks get on with it. Just no spraying into the eyes... the rest of the places... all ok.
Explaining why we are doing the collab
Its coming to Xmas, u can use this template done by Darren....

To make it more fun, I also created a few cardboard templates for the riders.

Every one were really getting into it. Spraying at their clothes, shoes, gloves, even the bikes! It was quite a carnival like feeling and really nice way to spend a friday evening.
After the spraying we went to a darker area to take a "before and after shot". Photos explain the effect better and here they are.

Rolling and chatting on the quiet stretch

Its nice to be riding!
Then it was a nice roll to Changi village, 40 mins away. As we rode, we could see the life paint "blinking" to the lights and its pretty visible.  We chatted as we rode, talking about every thing under the moon.  The cooling weather made it very pleasant and we gathered our bikes at the Changi village POSB atm.

The folks went about for their night snack, some a full meal and some just a drink.
P1120608
Breaktime and dessert!

Lets tuck in!

relax and chat over drinks

P1120609
So sweet!

Lots of chatter on bikes, life and more bikes. And then we retraced our route home.
Summary of the Life paint trial
What worked
1) The cardboard templates was really good to have, so that the effect wasn't too messy visually. It could be a lot worse..

2) The visibility of Lifepaint really depend on the ambient lighting conditions. In Singapore, our streets are usually very well lit. So it would not be too obvious. Until its in a dark area, that would work well
3) The carnival like feeling and laughter from this trial is great for creating more awareness on night visibility and safety for driver/cyclist.
4) Fabrics, gloves, rough surfaces are best for Lifepaint. I am quite surprised to see a black shoe become totally white when shined upon. This is something manufacturers could totally take up to improve their products night visibility.

Whats didn't so well
1) The paint overspray can make it look like a halloween party. Go easy to reduce the overspray. 12278823_777197582384351_984129080890694157_n
2) Life paint cannot work on painted and smooth surfaces. It would just slide off and not keep the reflective properties
3) waiting for more feedback and to add on the list.

Lastly, thank you Volvo Singapore and 30 brave LCSG riders to test out the Life Paint. Question.... do u want to do this again? Leave your thoughts and ideas on the comment tabs. Thanks!

LCSG Durian Open Mobilisation

They say photo tells a thousand words...  Photo credit Joeel and Esther
Westies riders and their Durians...

"live telecast" of the crowd at Chong Pang...   Photo by Jonathan Lee
Inspired by Esther's photo of the"Cat Mountain King" Durian at Chong Pang Market and WestiesDurian night cycling last week. We just have to cycle to eat Durian... In a short span of 12 hours, we mobilised 20 Durian lovers. Starting at Punggol MRT 1015 pm, we rode a short 11.5km to Chong Pang. Supported via Facebook photo update by some who already there, we were shown dwindling Durian supplies. This only serves to make us pedal faster.... at least I noted the speed was alot quicker than usual.  The Durian uncle closed 15min earlier and missed out on serving 20 hungry eager Durian cyclo lovers.  Ah well, we had fun and at least I now know where to get good durian. Disappointed, we rode back via Jalan Kayu and substituted Tou Hweh for Durian.  No choice lah.  Still we will be back next week. Onz?
No.... see Aaron Anguished look
No Durian... at least a group photo at the Durian stall
Still haven't give up... maybe he hide behind the board.. lets see

Team Sleepy Gonzales
Team Panda
Team Titanium Butt
Team Flying Turtle

爱骑车。爱友谊 << This is from Kim, and is my biggest take away...

80 folks met at ECP Mac to embark on a 128km loop around Singapore. This time, we did it east wards. The route is ECP Mac>> Changi Village>> Punggol>> Yishun>> Sembawang>> Woodlands>> Kranji>> Lim Chu Kang>> NTU>> Jurong West>> Pandan Loop>> West Coast road>> VivioCity>> Lau pak Sat >> ECP Mac.  And a bunch of us also continued to Tan tock Seng for the World Hospice Day.
The folks were split into 4 groups to ensure safety and better coordination.  They were as follows:
1) Sleepy Gonzales led by Sir KC and Sweeper Zack.
2)Panda group 2, led by Chief Panda Clarence Chang and Sweeper Vince Li.
3) Titanium Butt group 3, led by Titanium butt Chief Patrick Yee and Sweeper Adrianne Lee
4) Flying Turtle group 4, led by Encik George Lim and Master Sweeper Steven lim, Andy Yap and Boo.
First pack started around 8pm with 10 min intervals. We had cooling weather and no rain. The darkness however made it quite difficult for identification and we were very lucky to have Sean  and Vince Li sponsor the group, light sticks and blinking straps. To make the event even extra special, David Eng and Joeel worked hard to design and personally made the limited edition glow in the dark stickers. Only for those who rode. Not for sale.

roll off!
at night... it is good to have plently of blinkers!
Andy and Kimi @ Changi village... sup sup water...
@Kranji 7-11, tired but in good spirits:)
Through out the ride, I could hear shouts of encouragement egging each other on. Music blarring away. Folks sharing all their candies, deep heat, chocolates, power bar. What a team! Everyone looked out for one another. Special mention and really unforgetable was meeting LCSG Angels @ 3am in the morning. They took the form of Steve and Bernice. Waving down the cycling groups and giving out cold 100plus drinks and bannanas. That was so nice of them! When most would be sleeping, they came out of their way to cheer the team.. I am touched by their gestures and I know many too on that day. Thank you Angels!

Don't look like much but it all comes from the heart. That is all that matters
mobile pitstop in the middle of the nite... 3am to be exact!
With the constant chatting and cursing.... we eventually ended the ride at ECP. Thankfully no major incidents and all who completed was on a high. Elaine Pan, smiled and told me... "Backside pain... but feeling very good. I like it! yayyyh" And Joeel, who suffered from knee pain in the middle of the ride... grin and soldered  on. It was really a feat of endurance when I saw the pain written on his face. The coolest part... when he arrived... .team turtle lined up and cheered!
Dear, I love u!

Lastly I want to give my biggest thanks to all leads and sweepers and old birds for looking out for their flock and friends.  Thank you very very much for the the excellent sweeping by Steven Lim, Andy Yap and Boo. To ensure that the slower riders could find their way. What a ride and I could hear murmings of ..."this is chicken feed... maybe we combined KODH with 128km!!!" wah lau... u all very hard core... hmm should we or shouldnt we? Tell me what u think?   More photos here

To make it even more exciting. We will do another meaningful short ride for world hospice day!  This will extend our distance to 168 km which will equal to a century ride! I don't know if we can make it but I promise I will try. Cheer for us and if u see some strange lighted cyclists roaming the roads in the evening and early morning...thats should be us! Wet weather is a high probability, so waterproof ur iphone, wallet and make sure ur bikes are in working order.  The clock ticks.... and I await this ride with a bated breath... Rock and roll time!

George aka Mr Ben and Jerry suggested we meet and train a bit on the slopes one day- for the Taiwan trip come March 2012.... and a few clicks on the Facebook later... there was 200 over comments and 27 riders confirmed to do a night ride on a Tuesday.  Meeting at the start point, it felt carnival-like. People looking like Christmas trees and all things blinking. As we reached Seletar Dam, another group of lovecycling folks joined us. Overall I think it was about 50 ish - 60 riders! Outstanding!  Rolling on towards Mandai Rd and spinning up the slopes. I smiled, yes! This is what cycling is about.! Thank you George for leading the ride and many other old birds to look out for the new birds... And Lastly a Big thank you to Billy for the photos!
Next week ride details... here !
