New old bike story in ZaoBao

New Old bike
The poor bike have been standing there for a long time. It was a sad mess and the fram have a lot of scratches and rust spot. No major dents but thoroughly covered in dust and cobwebs. Rim wise, it was worn, useable and the spokes rusted. Cheng Sin Tyres deflated, hardens and cracked. It was just sitting there quietly for 20 years in my mum’s basement.
It was my bicycle. My very first bicycle. The bike I had bought using my first monthly salary working at the local bookstore. It wasn’t the top of the line bicycle but nevertheless it marked a very important phase of my life. I was in Secondary 1 and didn’t have a lot of money. I remembered the awe I had going to the bicycle shop at Hougang. I just told the shop uncle “ erh.. I want a racer and In a blur he sold me this bicycle with the words “ It is a steel frame, shimano parts, very good one” I couldn’t remember the full conversation but I remember distinctly how the bicycle looked. It was shiny and silver.  Pristine and clean. A size too big but it was just the right price.
With the bicycle, it was like having wings. I could explore the neighborhood and ride anywhere. It was my magic carpet and very liberating. Magical if u considered that I didn’t have lights nor a water bottle.
Powered by youth, I keep riding. It is amazing to feel the wind on my face. I rode from my home at Serangoon Gardens to Punggol End. Approaching Punggol was quite an adventure as it was still very forested and windy. I really didn’t know where I was heading. I just followed the road to the end of the jetty. Then turned back and rode home. Thinking back, I actually even rode on the ECP expressway once. For that ride, I was stopped by a policeman who told me that bicycles are not allowed on expressway. I honestly didn’t know that. Mr Policeman was smiling when he told me that. As if he also had done the same thing as I did when he was a schoolboy.
This bike is full of my childhood memories. I had to restore it. I spoke to many shop and all just told me to throw the bicycle away. That is was not worth it. I tried telling them about my childhood memories but they just laughed it off.
And eventually I found a shop by the name of TR bikes who agreed to help me. When I told TR bikes Lytnen, Chris and Henry my story, Chris looked at me and said. “Dun worry bro, we will take care of it.  2 weeks passed and I received a call from Chris. “The bicycle is ready.. come and see it….” I rushed down. Heart pumping and sweating. It was a beauty! Small changes and you can still see the scratches on the frame. I decided to leave it as is. Like battle scars and not shiny. The bike beckoned me to ride it and I did. Just a single speed, no fussing with gears. I pedaled and the bike moved forward. Just like old times. Wind in my face and I smiled. Welcome back old friend!

What is powder coating? watch this

A lady talking about her bike - Pinkie. Rather than junking it out the old, she recollects the good times and how well the bike fits her. So she decided to spiff up the old frame and this is her journey thru the power coating shop and learning more about power coating. I wonder if there is a similar shop in Singapore that does that?

Bottle tree to Mandai/Thomson road area ride

Early morning, I woke up around 4ish and couldn't sleep. Guess it must be the milk tea I had at Hongkong style cafe the nite before.  Looking out of the window, I could see storm clouds in the horizon with an occasional lighting. Oh dear, today is going to be a wet ride... so it might be a no show for many...Well, I reasoned, if I am awake, I might as well ride... and maybe take my new tripod to see how I can use it.  Strapped on the tripod to NOb(new old bike) I took the Jalan Bilrat as a shortcut... there was no one except for me.. nice and slow.. enjoying the breeze. I should do this more!
At Bottletree,  The regulars - Francis, Sharon, Wai Tong, Boo, Andy and Mr Teo.... We also have 2 new and very youthful addition of Brandon and Jimm, both riding fixies... Seems like this is the new Skateboard! Chris also showed up in a super duper fierce blood red Ferrari Felt roadbike, all decked up with Aero bars.  He also rode all the way from East coast to join us for the ride. Way to go!
The ride was really relaxing and simple. Follow the PCN to the Zoo and we also did a small detour to see upper seletar reservoir. Then it was to the famous Yishun Ampang niang toufoo to feed our empty fuel tanks. A nice surprising end, Jimm led us to a special shortcut along the canal.. took us to Bottle tree in half the time!  Then it was each his own to walk around the booths or head back for a nice cool beer and shower.  Till the next ride!

National day ride from Potong Pasir to Pasir ris beach

Francis wanted to see how our PCN were doing and suggested we try Potong pasir to Pasir ris. I have never done this route before and was abit concerned as I was riding a single speed new old bike and Francis and Rodney were riding their fixies. Don't know if we can last the trip... but as we rode.. the worries went away.  The single speed experience was surprisingly good... afew cranks to get up to speed and I was humming along at quite a rate... and I have to consciously slow down :) I guess my daily morning rides is helping me improve my riding:)

Back to the route.. The roads were very quiet in the mornings and it was pleasant to be riding and not be too worried about Cars. The air was cooling and crisp as we headed towards mac pherson, then  weaved thru Ubi and rolled into Bedok reservoir. To add to the National day theme, we tied the flags behind the bike. Here are some cool shots on the ride.

lost and found after 20 years

drippy drippy
We were supposed to have a riding session today..  but it has been raining pretty heavily and the ride is cancelled. So sad.. looking for a ride after being sick for the past 2 weeks.
Talking about rain, a few weeks ago it rained really hard and my parents place got flooded in the basement. This time, it wasn't too bad.. just 2 inches I was told by my brother. I went down to check and somehow, I happen to find my old road bike in midst of the mess interior.
The poor bike have been standing there for a long time. It was a sad mess. The frame have a lot of scratches and rust spots..no dents and covered in dust. Rims wise, the spokes were rusty and Cheng Sin tires deflated, harden and cracked..   Anyway, I took it back home and gave it a cleaning to evaluate what 23 years can do to a bicycle.
how it looks after cleaning up the 20 years of dust and dirt

"Lacer" Steel frame with rust spots
old Shimano crankset... never heard of series..

How I got my bicycle...  It was 1987...
Ok, to calibrate expectations... this isn't any "top-grade bicycle in the barn story" but this very ordinary bicycle marked a time in my life. I was in secondary 1 or 2..  and got an evening job working in a book/provision store. On the first payday, I went looking to buy a bicycle at a shop near home. Visiting the bicycle shop was quite an experience. There wasn't internet then... so I didn't have any knowledge of bicycle. I didn't have alot of money."Erhhh.. I just wanted a "racer" .. . the ones with the cool drop bars." I told the bicycle uncle.  Bicycle shop uncle looked at me and then offered this bicycle. "It is a steel frame, got Shimano parts ..very good one.." he mumbled on.. which I didn't really understand..   I looked at the shiny bicycle with the drop bar.. and I remember the silver griptape...... I tried the bike, it was a size too big..heck.. I can deal with it.. maybe I will grow up more, I thought...(nope.. still the same size after all this yr.. only heavier).  I was in a trance...anyhow... I blur blur paid him and got out of the shop..
I have wings!!!  wowweeee... having a bicycle was liberating..like having wings! I no longer have to take the bus although initially i followed the bus routes to explore neighbourhood.  Being young means u feel invincible... I rode without blinkers, no helmet...no water bottles.. nothing. Powered by youthful legs.. it is amazing how far I rode..
rolling hills of pungol... pic taken from ivyidang4blogspot.com

I remember the days/nites where i would ride from my mum place at serangoon gardens to the Punggol point end. Approaching Punggol was a real treat.. it was quite Ulu (country) then .. it was forested and the sides of the roads were old fish/pig farm. The rolling hills meant u have speed up down slope and use the momentum to ride up the slope.  Life is really funny, I never knew after 20 years, i would be living in Punggol, where the farms used to be.
Thinking back... gosh..I  even rode to Changi airport in the dead of the nite.. no lights, no blinkers and waterbottle.. using the express way!!!  It was really thirsty... :) I was later stopped by a policeman in patrol car who did a friendly horn. ...He nicely told me that bicycles are not allowed on expressways and I should get off the express way as soon as possible.. And also legally, a bicycle needs to have blinkers.. He smiled as if he had also did the the same thing as a school boy himself.. ...
I have thought about doing the restoration myself but I think I will screw it up... so after googling and talking to people. I decided to visit TR bikes and check them out. Talking to Chris, Henry and Lyten, I am convinced that they will do a good job. Currently, my old friend is in the steady hands of  TR bikes and undergoing a much needed "spa" operation to get it running again..  will post more when he comes back.. soon I hope.
