Rider Profile Berenda Lim

Berenda with her Brompton @ ECP

First ride to Pengarang

Learning to clean and service her Brompton @ LCSG servicing WS

Intro yourself:
Halo everyone
Am Berenda Lim – working as Corp Finance Accountant in Sport Retail Company. Biking affair started in June’12, it was out of the sudden interest and gradually ended up as a weekly activity happen deeply poison by every enjoyable ride and those lovely bikes. On regular basic - I will try to join every Friday nite ride (PNR) and Sunday LCSG morning ride as long as my schedules permit. Else will be improtus rides organize by some of the regular cycling khakis.

How did you started cycling
1st pedaling step began when I was just a toddler, a Red steel 3-wheels Kar Chia (bike) that was passed down from cousins after one another it was still in good condition upon receiving. During early childhood hay day, cousins and I will spend our weekend at my grandparent’s farm in Lim Chu Kang. As kids we bike randomly chasing around each other within grandpa’s vegetation plantation and fish pond sometimes crash into those poor vegetables. Our parents had forbidden us from cycling especially during raining day because we will cover with patches of mud and dirts difficult to clean/wash it off. Soon those days slowly varnish the moment authority announce taking over the piece of land in early 90s. In the past, cycling was renting of bike and simple leisure ride at ECP with a group of friends. Owing a bike wasn’t in my shopping list till recently.

Why do you like cycling
I must admit me being lazy bum hence cycling is part of exercising which allow me to stay healthy and keep fit. Over a period with weekly workout, its help to build up stamina and condition to become fitter.
Exploring places on 2 wheels is fun and challenging.  So far, my hardworking Brompton M6L accompanies me to Desaru trip (Aug12) and LCSG 128km island ride event (Sep12). Looking back am proud to participant in both, it had its own fair share of memorable and display team spirit and bonding along with fellow cyclists. Glad to meet people from all walks of life, sharing their cycling knowledge, experience and overseas trip.

It’s always heartening and delighted to see cyclists such as Uncle KC, Francis Chu, George Lim, and Aunty Audrey who are still passion and activate in cycling community. Likewise, cycling do engages couples bonding (George Kee and Wendy / Allan and his wife) and close up family ties (Taiwoon, Steven Tang, Jonathan, Desmond Chia, Daniel).
LCSG sunday ride constantly bring us to new places and exploring new route was exciting and of course not to forget LCSG motto Eat Ride and Play (ERP). Every Sunday ride is always fill with fun and laughter needless to say hilarious especially when Steven Tang is around.

When you met LCSG – how was it like and how u meets us
In mid-May’12 - By chance one of my longtime girlfriend – Lisa Koh mention about LCSG had organized a cycling trip to Desaru. The thought of short break chilling out under sun, sand & sea and as Non-cyclist for the trip hence I decided to sign up and will be Lisa roommate. Auntie Mary (Desaru Trip organizer) was officially intro to me at Paya Lebar Safra cycling event – unfortunately she break the new the entire Desaru Trip I was the only non-cyclist as such either I join as cyclist or pay for my own land transport. From then till Desaru trip was 8 weeks away, Aunty Mary pre-empt the group with 6 weeks of intensive training program to include long distance, slopes, endurance, stamina etc  to ensure we are fit for the trip. Looking back, my 1st training with the group was a total disaster and horrifying….. Thru more training rides its lead to slowly build up more confidence and getting to know/manage my bike gearing well. Big Thanks Q to Desaru Training team: Aunty Mary, Audrey, George Kee, Wendy, Steven, Bernice, Louis, Darren, Eddie, Vince and the rest.
Extract from Aunty Mary favorite quote – Crank by Crank we will reach (never give up), this sentence itself explain a lot and somehow kind of blueprint still ringing in my mind till now.

What is your steel horse
1.     Dahon D7 – 1st bike got me into cycling
2.     Brompton M6L – friendly commuter bike
3.     On the way …. another beauty to reveal

Your favorite cycling route and Khaki
There is no definite favorite cycling route or khaki simply because every ride is fun, enjoyable and challenging on its own. Discovering, exploring is part of each cycling route and getting to meet new fellow cyclists or catching up with old khaki.
Looking forward BTW  (bike to work) – (if) possible in near future.
I love the fresh dew smell whenever rides pass some open semi-greenly field or forest either during wee hour or dawn…. Serenity to mother nature

Rider Profile - Zack Tay and read what he learns from cycling!

From the rear
Zack on the cover of SPIN!!!
This is Zack Tay, resident Lovecycling golden poster hunk in our very nicely designed(by Joeel lee) LCSG jersey. Dun let the smiling face and slender legs fool you. Under the hood is V8 engine with twin turbo... those who tried to "chiong" with him will know. Most of all, Zack is a kind soul who can really ride.
He has already done a charity ride event in Malaysia called Bike and Blade. It is a 320km rolling hills to raise funds for St Luke hospital. Now together with Steven Lim, Tan Geeli, they will embark on another event - called Klicks for Grace  to help raise fund for Yong - En Care centre.  On 7th Jan, in 24 hours, they will cycle continuously to complete 400km or 3 loops around Singapore. And if this is not enough... it is on foldies ok!!!...  Now this will definitely test their willpower and stretch their capacity to the max. From Zack, he said to me.. no problem.. this is all for the old, poor and needy.. I will do it. Just like that! Wow! So if you like what they do and want to help... pls visit this site and learn more.  more on his story below..........

Congrats... you made it! And here is his story on how he go into cycling - direct from the horses mouth.
"I started cycling since young from BMX stun bike to offroad MTB.
Stopped at age of 19 due to entering of army and after that started off with my working life and got a car as transport on Feb 2007.
In 2009, Steven Lim organised cycling as a friend's outing. From then, I got back into cycling and started to join a few cycling groups and finally ended enjoying riding with LCSG in 2010. From there, I hear cases like Francis Chu, who sold away car and uses two wheels as mean of transport, I told myself that I should be able to do that as well. My home to workplace is only 12km away. I can cycle to work to exercise and stay healthy, yet save money and its Eco-friendly. Therefore after months of hard decisions, finally sold my car in on Nov 20"

It is called Heart

Beautiful wishing box by Esther lim
Xmas is about giving to those in need. I, personlly feel that I am very blessed to have a beautiful wife, child and a whole bunch of warm, fun loving lovecyclingsg friends. Rather then just a big party and get drunk. I thought why not we make a difference and make a child smile this year.
Come 17th Dec, we( lovecyclingsg) will be at Pertapis to spend an afternoon with the children. Play some games, makan and give a present to each of the child. To make it more meaningful, the children themselves will be writing their wishes(limit to $20 as we are no Warren Buffet) and we will do our best to find the present. The presents are very kindly sponsored by the kind angels of LCSG. And today when I saw how lovely Esther made the Wishing box... I just had this in my mind.... Heart. LCSG folks have heart!

16th Oct 2011 - LCSG supports World Hospice day

@ TTSH start point of the World Hospice day ride
LCSG is a group with a heart. So even when it is very tiring after cycling through the night, a bunch of 128 LCSG iron butters carried on and participated in the ride. All for a good cause. We were joined by the rest of the lovecyclingsg crew- Diane, Gywn, Kevin, Derrick and Nick Wong. A total of almost 500 riders turned up to support the hospice ride, making for quite a carnival event.
Kimi and Gywn in a nice cooling morning

Ok, here is the not so nice bit, but is important to share. I hope this does not sound like a lecture but having all of the riders ride at the same time is a very dangerous act. There are too many variables that could go wrong. The rider's skill level and types of bike were bunched up so tight that it was really abit hairy for me and my friends.
lots of traffic towards Lavender road
Diane with her apple green Brompton
Saw Bing with here crew... drumming as one!
I hope for the future mass rides, that it should be spilt into more manageable packs so that riders do not clog up traffic like what was experienced on the actual day. The cycling route should be better planned to make use of the Park connector or have traffic marshal to isolate some real danger spots. Like the junction at Moulmein/CTE/Balestier area , the crazy 3 lane switch on kallang road which riders have to move 3 lanes from left to right. While at the same time many cars, bus zoom in dangerously close to the riders. This is the spot that one of the riders was seriously injured. Last evening, I checked with Elaine is that he is now in a stable condition and out of ICU. That's good news!
The injured rider affected me alot as we rode towards the end point at ECP. I thought to myself;" how can I make our LCSG rides safe yet fun for all. More really needs to done for Singapore Cyclists..." Riding on the roads at certain sections is really too dangerous - my mind still on the 3 lane switch, and I will definitely avoid this road junction - That's really all I can do...and blog about it.
While we want to promote cycling as an alternative way and a good mode of transport. The infrastructure is really more car centric and not catered for cyclist.  All it takes is a nasty bad accident to set us back into the dark ages. Friends, please ride safe, be safe. Stay alive! Well done LCSG for ur time and supporting the world hospice day!
PS. Thank you Mr Teo for your generous contribution!
